Which are your favorite Singapore cafes?
Weiting: MavRx Coffee Apothecary across the street from the HotelQuickly office has amazing no-frills coffee and really cool interior designs.
Alnishyia: For a nice quiet day away from the office with ample sockets to plug in and just work, I recommend PS Cafe Palais Renaissance on Orchard Road, Da Paolo Gatronomia at Cluny Court and Ben ‘n Jerry at Dempsey Hill. PS Cafe has a lovely ambiance (I usually get the huge truffle fries), Da Paolo is close to the Botanic Gardens where you can take a break, and Ben ‘n Jerry is perfect place for a coffee date.
What’s your favorite open-air food venue?
A: Chomp Chomp and East Coast Park are like open-air food courts and extremely popular amongst Singaporeans. At both, my friends and I would usually order the following: oyster omelet, fried carrot cake, BBQ chicken, BBQ chili stingray and Hokkien noodles.
What’s your favorite spot for breakfast on the weekend?
W: Food for Thought has great breakfasts and is in a perfect location for a morning stroll in the park after.
A: You have to try the thick, fluffy prata on Tanglin Halt near the Commonwealth MRT. For a local breakfast, Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak is probably one of the best nasi lemak stalls in Singapore. Come early because it usually sells out before noon and there’s a long queue. I always get the Royal Rumble: fried tamban fish, fried chicken wing, a piece of otah and a potato bergedil (potato patty.) Super shiok!
What’s your favorite buffet in town?
W: Sun’s Cafe at Grand Pacific Hotel has a really good range of Peranakan food at really decent prices!
A: Crystal Jade Xiao Long Bao Buffet. I swear by this buffet! This is usually one of the places I bring my foreign friends to. It’s usually packed so you need to make a reservation beforehand. The xiaolong bao is super tasty, there’s also a hotpot with a choice of two types of soup. The buffet happens at three different times of day and costs SGD $30.80 altogether.
What’s your favorite spot for a quick and tasty lunch?
W: There are lots of great places all around. Try Foong Kee for traditional roast meats.
A: I just can’t get enough of the rice and chili sauce at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at Maxwell Food Centre. Also, Noodle Story at Amoy Food Centre has amazing wanton noodles. The noodles are really springy, the char siew melts in your mouth, and the potato-wrapped prawn fritter adds some crunch to the whole dish.
What are some dishes visitors can’t leave Singapore without trying?
W: Laksa! Nasi lemak! Black pepper crab! Chicken rice! There are too many!
A: Ice Kachang is a dessert that’s near and dear to Singaporean hearts. Katong Laksa is an absolute favorite among Singaporeans (try to look beyond the poor service.) Skip the overpriced crabs at Newton Circus, and head to Jumbo Seafood for their famous chili crab with deep fried mantou, salted egg yolk prawns, crispy baby squids and mee goreng. An alternative place to find good chili crab is the NO SIGNBOARD SEAFOOD at East Coast Park.
What’s your favorite bar in town?
W: Raffles hotel is probably the most iconic hotel in Singapore. Its Long Bar is famous for the creation of the Singapore Sling, the most famous cocktail in the country!
A: Forget ZOUK and Attica — those are for teenagers. Singapore has a wide variety of rooftop bars with reasonably priced drinks and amazing views. Try the ‘secret’ bar 28 Hong Kong Street, or go for cocktails at Empire, Library or Kinky.
